  1. For Reflection: The Reid Park Zoo is host to a large diversity of animals, many near extinction. What is your favorite animal?
  2. For Reflection: Solar Energy is able to significantly cut costs for many things. Ask your parents if they have ever considered installing solar panels for your home.
  3. For Reflection: Try to find the Malayan tiger and see if it is in the sun or shade. Animals get their energy by eating other organisms. For instance, cows are herbivores so they don't eat other animals, but they do eat plants for energy. How do plants get their energy?
  4. For Reflection: Zoo's try to make each animal's habitat similar to the real thing. Imagine what it would be like if everything around you was different. If we don't find a way to use alternative fuel sources like solar power, hydrogen, or batteries, the future could be very bleak. What do you want to do when you're older? Maybe you could help find a solution!
  5. For Reflection: If you are sitting down on the bench, and possibly in the shade, imagine how lucky you are to get a break from the heat. The sun is working hard 24/7, 365. Did you know that, according to the American Solar Energy Society, enough sunlight falls on the earth's surface each minute to meet world energy demand for an entire year. Why aren't we utilizing this incredible energy source?!
  6. For Reflection: Palm trees, as well as many other plants found in the desert, survive because they collect water and get energy from the sun. There are solar powered water heaters available to purchase for your home. See the section in this pamphlet about Tucson Electric Power.
  7. For Reflection: Flamingoes change color due to their diet, mostly shrimp. Humans have adapted to their environments over the years, creating different skin tones. Can you think of any other things that have adapted to their environment?
  8. For Reflection: Besides animals, this zoo is also home to Tucson's first Solar Powered, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design awarded building, the Lee H. Brown Family Conservation Learning Center. Make sure you stop by this unique building during your time at the zoo. Think about how you and your family save energy.
